I just jotted down a few lines on the bus ride home. This is a possible structure for my presentation at the AUT School of Art & Design Postgraduate Conference 2010 (see the seminar presentation abstract here). The conference is in early August, so it seems there's still some time left — but the weeks will undoubtedly pass quickly. For this page just keep in mind the good old credo:
"The first draft of anything is shit." —Ernest Hemingway
Seminar Structure (draft 1)
- Overview
- Terminology
- What is reality (in the context of this research project)?
- What is illusion?
- What signifies the borderland?
- Delusional perception
- Hallucination
- etc.
- Key Concepts and Contexts
- narrative short film
- story reality, story illusion and the leap of faith
- communicating subjective experiences to a wider audience
- I see what you (don't) see: transporting an audience into a character's mind
- psychological background: dream/wake state and delusional perception/hallucination
- etc.
- Methodologies
- Heuristics: experience-based problem solving
- "Collaborative sharing": exchanging ideas, telling and retelling of the narrative
- "Catching the Big Fish": consciousness and creativity
- Narrative
The story about a man who is searching for the end of his reoccurring nightmare.
(Depending on the development stage by the time of the conference this may be the entire narrative with a complete storyboard.
More likely this will briefly outline the basic rough story. At present there are still some major problems, the most annoying one being that it is still mainly plot, less character driven. The story will most likely not be the focus of this presentation.) - Hypotheses
Some initial testing through experiments. This list may grow, but at present:
- "The Quarter Circle Transformative Dolly Zoom"
- General concept
- Classic dolly zoom samples
- Why a quarter circle transformative dolly zoom?
- Concept with drawings, 3D visualisations and other imagery
- The mathematics behind this
- A new approach for the language of film (or: demonstrating differences in the use of film syntax)
- Other applications
- Relevance
- "The Tunnel Passage to the Unconscious"
- The womb image in mythology
- Postmodern examples
- Application in the narrative
- Relevance
- Further thoughts on the transformative self
- Possible other hypotheses (optional)
- "The Quarter Circle Transformative Dolly Zoom"
- Outlook
- Future research possibilities
